When I first stated pursuing professional photography I didn't know what type of photographer I was. Heck, I didn't even know there were types to be. I just thought it was enough to have my camera, "the eye", and patient clients willing to let me learn along the way. If figured eventually it would be long enough and I could call myself a professional and that was all there was to it.
Ha! I had no idea.
Fast froward a couple years, I found myself taking an online wedding photography class from CreativeLive. It was The Complete Wedding Photographer Experience by Jasmine Star. I was still reeling from what I thought was a failed first attempt at 2nd shooting ( I'll get to more on that another time.) and I needed direction. That class is EVERYTHING. It literally changed the entire trajectory of my career.
It was there that Jasmine assigned us to define what type of photographer we were. I was stumped. I had to google the different types to find which one fit my style. True story! Finding the category I fit in changed nothing at all about what I do or who I am, but it was nice to be able to say, "Hi, I'm Samantha Clemmer. I'm a lifestyle photographer and lover of natural light."
It's important to know, that no matter what style folder you fit into, we all have different styles that are true and unique to us as photographers. We're all different. Your style might not be my style and my style may not be yours and you know what? That's OK! Neither of us are doing it wrong. There are clients out there who are looking for both of us :) At the end of the day, as long as you are being true to you and what you want to represent your brand then you're on the right path.
Keep on hustling!
